Just in case you've forgotten.

Hello loyal readers!
I know we suck. We haven't posted since the ice-age blah blah blah, sorry. Life happens.

Anywhoo, we just need to take the time to reiterate this just in case we didn't make it perfectly clear enough last time....Never,
NEVER, NEVER order Chinese Food from Phoenix.
{What did you say?} {Penis?} {Huh?}

DO. NOT. ORDER. CHINESE. FROM. PHOENIX.
You will be left staring at your food wondering where, god where, the FDA is hiding, left with
$10 less in your wallet, and a hell of a stomach ache if you braved the disturbingly brain resembling "Chow Mein".

With this public service announcement out of the way Nellie and Sally are pleased to announce our first contest! Whoever can provide us with the name, menu, and location of more than just bearable chinese restaurant (take-out is, as always, preferred) in the Storrs/Mansfield area will win our everlasting adoration and an undisclosed cash prize! Entries will be accepted from October 5th 2010 until whenever the hell we graduate. Rules may vary*, must be 18 years or older to enter, void where prohibited. Good luck!

*Changs does NOT count. We are unimpressed.

Jealouz?

Sakura for the win.
Not much to say here except the Habachi Dinner is a perfect 10.

My only advice? Put the white ginger sauce on EVERYTHINGGGGG

Incredible Burgers & Dogs: Incredibly Bad

For having such promise, and such potential it brings me great sadness to have to give Incredible Burger a skip it.

It all started a few weeks ago at breakfast, while reading the paper over some oatmeal. Just imagine my delight to stumble upon a story about a new burger place that is open 24 hours on weekends and serves breakfast around the clock. My dreams had come true. Filled with blissful optimism I went through the rest of the week excited to test out the treasures that Incredible Burgers & Dogs promised to hold.

That very next Friday my friend Jimmy and I made the trek over only to discover that they had LIED. They closed at midnight and it was 12:31. Strike One.

Since that incident, two weeks ago, I have been waiting and waiting for the right time to indulge my sliders fantasy. So today, a Saturday, I spent the entire day studying diligently with the promise of walking over at 10 to reward myself for my efforts. After convincing my friend Chewy to tag along, we made the journey.

I ordered a single slider and a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese, sausage, and 'potato' on a roll. Chewy got the 3 fried oreos for a $1 deal and a chili-dog. I really need to stress the fact that I was absolutely giddy right after ordering my food. I was on cloud nine. I was blissfully ignorant to the atrocity I was about to experience. Lets begin the list of grievances shall we:

1. While watching the man at the grill make a slider (now that I think about it I'm pretty sure it was mine), I watched the cheese get stuck on the bottom of his spatula and him stick his grimy finger on it and wipe it back on the burger.
2. He then proceced to whip his phone out of his pocket and start texting with those same grimy fingers that touched my burger, on imaginably even grimier keys.
3. Although Chewy's wait was an expected and reasonable one, it took them much longer than it should have to make my food. They two guys at the grill spent a good amount of time chit chatting while my sandwich was sitting there getting pneumonia.
4. While waiting for my food I realized I could really use some orange juice to go along with my sandwich, I asked the waitress if they sell orange juice, and said they were all out, she however was drinking orange juice herself. A bit fishy huh?
Strike Two(s).

And now for the actual review:

Get Agains:
Fried Oreos: Cheap, oily, and delicious. For what they are, they are wonderful.

Sliders: Not only adorable but really quite good. They come with cheese and onions and I made the rookie mistake of not asking for pickle or ketchup. If you're going to go here (against my warnings) this is the thing to get.

SKIP IT:
The POBO Breakfast Sandwich. Egg, Potato, Meat (Sausage), Cheese, Roll. Sounds wonderful right? DEAD WRONG. This may be the single worst food item I have ever eaten. I used to think it was pretty hard to fuck up a breakfast sandwich but I was mistaken. The first bite took me to the potato portion which was simply appalling. Sheer Terror. I don't know what it quite tasted like but something like what I imagine rotten potatoes and the larvae that feasted upon them to taste like. After immeditely scraping the potato off the top I tried again. So lame it hurt. The egg was not a breakfast sandwich egg, the sausage was more like Kielbasa than it should have been and the cheese's presence was not felt. On the whole it tasted like dead dreams. Strike fucking three.

So what have we learned here today folks? Not to dream? Not to expect quality service? Or hygenic service for that matter? Not to have faith in the sanctity of the Breakfast Sandwich?
No. What we have learned here is when a place is promising something that sound too incredible to be true, it probably is.

Oh, and I wish I could take the tip that I gave them, in good faith, back.

A Wonderful Constant (for the moment)

There's been no sight of a terrible Floridian winter in the UConn dining halls, because the oranges are virtually perfect. Whether they be from South, East, or Northwest the oranges have just been superb. I give my full recommendation to grab an orange as your take out option whenever possible, plus the Vitamin C couldn't hurt.

I now take a break from my Soc. studying for an update

Skip it:
"Pizza Soup" Sally and I both were captivated by the title of this soup and gave it a shot. In an unexpected and freakish way it actually tasted like pizza... With peperoni slices, sausage chunks and meatballs it was a chunky tomato soup that was fine as dunking grounds for tonight's exceptional grilled cheese, but on it's own? No way José.

We're alive.....I swear.

Hello all followers, probs only Mom and Butters at this point....just stopping by real quick to let ya'll know that I'm still kicking it. In our defense for our serious lack of postage, it's midterm season so cut a little slack. I'm planning a tribute to Wacky Dessert Wednesdays that will truly be a wonder to behold. I'd invest in an extra pair of socks in preparation...

We're BaaaaAAaackk!

Hello universe! We are ever so happy to be back on campus and our reunion with the Northwest dining hall has been a joyous one. We're going to smush together some various review from the past week. Bon Appetit!

Get Again:
-Tonight's Chicken Parm: The lightly breaded chicken was spicy and moist with the perfect proportion of sauce and cheese on top, delectable.

-Grilled Cheese w/ Tomato soup: Believe it or not, up until now I've never dabbled in this beautiful flavor combination (Most likely to blame was was my 16-year fear of soup) but boy, it sure is tasty! I'm a big fan of Northwest's grilled cheese--crunchy, melty, buttery--basically all things good in this world. The tomato soup was the perfect consistency, not to thick, nor to watery.

-Turkey Sandwich from yesterday's lunch comfort line: Surprisingly delicious. It was on a different kind of roll than normal, almost challah like. It consisted of turkey, honey mustard, and some melted prov--really quite delicious. 3/3 people at my table ate it in it's entirety. Bravo.

-Dumplings with Bacon and Onions: Synonymous with a good ole fashioned pierogi, those bad boys were the tastiest things I've had all week! Basically for all of our noncultured followers (it's okay I still love you) it's like a dumpling that's filled with mashed potatoes and a little cheese with bacon bits and onion on top. Amazing right? They are little dew drops that floated down from heaven.

-Creme Puffs: Nothing brings a smile to a flogger's (my new term for food-blogger) face quite like a creme puff does. The crust was fluffy and crunchy without that dreaded stale taste. Half of the fun of the dessert is battling gravity to keep the giant creme blob that emerges from hitting the floor. The only improvement I'd like to see is the creme a little smoother.

Mehhh:

-Penne with Broccoli, Canadian Bacon & a lil' Alfredo Sauce: The definition of mehh. My mom does is waaaaaay better. Some of the broccoli was awkwardly mushy, just sayin'

Skip it:

-Whatever excuse they tried to pawn off as a double cheeseburger: Tsk tsk tsk Northwest, you can't leave it that rare. If Zakko gets E.Coli we know the source.
Not cool, not cool.

We're starting a new segment here on SNEN called scary food of the day. Basically one of us is forced to try at least one food a day that looks unappetizing to us, or downright scary. Being that Sally just got her wisdom teeth out, I'm giving her a break and taking the bullet for the first week. So far here's the food I've braved:

-Pork Cutlet of last night's dinner: Now normally I'm a huge fan of pork cutlets, but these guys simply lacked any aesthetic appeal. Thankfully what they lacked in looks they made up for in taste. Perfectly moist, with a zesty crust, it made it a good experience for all.

-Vegetable Stir Fry with Tofu: This was potentially the ugliest dish I've ever seen in the dining hall, looking like a can of spinach was on a cruise ship with some red pepper bits baby corn and some other unidentifiable veggies when it hit an iceberg and sank and they all washed up on shore. I swear the tofu moved on it's own. When I finally mustered up the courge to try it I was pleasantly surprised to how fine it was. It was nothing extraordinary, but hey, it's vegan.

HOLY CRAP my mouth is on fiyahhhhhh

So pretty mellow day today, that is until I got a Grab-n-Go wrap that added some unnecessary spice to my day. Ordered the Buffalo Chicken wrap with lettuce, tomato, and blue cheese dressing (which they had to go dig out from the back, sorry for slowing things down!) but did not see the pain and suffering that followed. First bite was lovely, had a little of everything in it, but on bite two I was already feeling the heat. Like a hungry fool I kept going only to realize a few more bites later that my mouth was on fire. Way too much buffalo sauce (punishment for making her find some blue cheese?) resulted in much pain and suffering. My lips were numb, my tongue was throbbing, and I felt the burn go all the way down my throat. NOT COOL. Sad thing is, I will still get this wrap in the future but I have learned my lesson: ask for minimal sauce as to avoid another disastrous experience.

Nellie got the Godfather (an Italian-combo of sorts) on wheat bread, looked good, didn't cause her any distress so I'd say it was a success and a definite "get again."

PLATES ARE BACK! I REPEAT PLATES ARE BACK! And some grab & going.

Order has been restored in the Universe, we celebrate the return of our old friends, real plates, cups, and utensils. Amen.

We've been trying to use up our flex passes the past couple days and have been frequenting the Grab-n-go quite a bit. Here's our take on our favorite two:

Get Agains:
-Chipotle Chicken and Bacon, The classic, everyone and their mother has gotten this constantly "featured" wrap. Be forewarned though, they really like to go heavy on the Chipotle sauce, so have something waiting to console your mouth. I highly recommend nuking this wrap a bit before eating. The hint of melty cheese is a good touch.

-Buffalo Chicken Wrap with Bleu Cheese, L&T, We're big fans of ordering off the menu these days and this wrap is our 'hidden' gem. It does have it's faults though, for some reason the bleu cheese is very chunky, like boulders of bleu cheese hidden sporadically throughout. Nothing you can't flick out though, which honestly is a little fun. Depending on who makes your wrap the buffalo sauce might end up on a completely different end than your chicken, but that's on a wrapper to wrapper basis. All in all though, this is our favorite.

Enjoy the snow, and try not to study tooooo much!

Our first Chaugie's.

As the semester dwindles down, and the opportunities to spend our unused points lessen, we decided it was about time for a date with Chuck and Augie. For all the non Storrers here, Chaugies is the restaurant on campus, and it is BALLERRRRRRR. Here's the lowdown:

Get Agains: (Fricken Everything)

Chicken Slider Trio, It's like the best of 2 worlds, a fusion of all things awesome. The adorable quality of sliders, with the finger lickin' delectableness of the 3 best kinds of chicken sandwich. Honestly, we couldn't ask for more from a meal. Here's the ranking of the 3:

1. Barbecue Chicken with Cajun Asian Slaw, Perfection. It's only fault was that it was small, but it can't help if it slides. The sweet tangy sauce on the crispy chicken, with the ryhmeing dynamic duo of flavor of the crispy slaw made for a dynamite bite. It made me feel like singing.

2. Pepper-Jack Ranch, An all around solid chicken sandwich. The chicken was crispier in this one which was appreciated, and honestly, I've yet to find something with pepperjack on it that I don't approve of. It paired nicely with the caesar salad we ate too. (More to come on that front later)

3. Buffalo Chicken with BlueCheese and Tomato, It was fine, Salamander wasn't to hot on the twang of the sauce, but for what it was it was worthy.

Caesar Salad with Crutons and Aciago Cheese, Now, anyone who has eaten my mother's caesar salad can attest to how heavenly it is(Hi Mom!), so I have very high standards. Chaugies version satisfied my needs. The right amount of creamy dressing, an abundance of cheese, and plenty of croutons were the reason why we ate the whole thing(It was pretty large mind you). I'll probs get it again next time.

Pesto-Alfredo Penne, It's like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny had a baby. Everything I love about the pasta world came together to make that dish. I wanted to bathe in it. The broccoli and tomato woven throughout added nice texture and that sauce was so creamy, my arteries might as well just shut the fuck down.

Bravo Chuck and Augie, well played sirs.
We look forward to seeing you in the near future.

Disposable Disturbance of the day: The reason man evolved and invented the coffee mug was so that he would no longer have to scald his hand when he wanted to drink coffee. We have sacrificed this advancement with the paper cup, and double cupping is now a necessity. THAT'S TWICE AS MUCH CUP WASTE! ARHH!HHHH!HHH!!!

Dinner 12/2

Not much to report on today, but we must make up for lost time and blog away... Hit dinner early tonight so we didn't have too too much to choose from, but we found good stuff nonetheless.

Get Again:
-The burger was very well done tonight, topped with pickle slices (awesome), a little onion, and ketchup (no BBQ sauce, but this was a nice change) it was a lovely choice with a trusty old friend.
-The mexi-fries were the best they have ever been. Period.
-The fajita chicken pizza was a surprising hit! Very tasty :)
-Veggies were spot-on tonight, excellent selection and very fresh.
-The ice cream was a dream to scoop tonight, such a good decision going back for a little!
-Mike Zakko claims the "shark" wrap was out of this world amazing, but I'm not so sure... I'll take his word for it.

No real Mehhs or Skip Its tonight, we played it pretty safe.

After some research, it has been determined that the reason we've been subjected to plastic silverware and paper plates is because the dishwasher is broken and it will cost more than $10,000 to fix it, therefore dining services has to place a bid. Apparently we will be using the disposable dishware for quite a bit longer, with the expectation of it not being fixed until after break. Besides the disgusting fact that we are slaughtering the environment, it is insanely annoying to use these disposables. Henceforth from now until the day that order is reestablished, we will be posting an inconvenience of the day regarding the disposable situation. Today's is:
-Have you ever tried eating a salad with a plastic fork? It's a losing battle.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Northwest travels back to the Middle Ages!

So, let's just call a spade, a spade, we're lazy. We got a little sidetracked for the last ohh, 30 days or so. Anyhoo, Northwest is back and it's better than ever! The dining hall was transformed for a Middle Ages themed feast.

Paintings of castles, trees, and dragooooons adorned the windows, and torches hung from the walls. The main walkway was lined with flags of spirit, and the walls with posters with the Code of Knights. They even cleared out a whole section of tables and set up thrones for the King and Queen of ye ol' hall. We have to give a shout-out to the awesome staff, we could tell that some of the younger members were less than enthused to be wearing the silly outfits of Middle Ages, but you still did. Thanks, it made our week. Now on to the main attraction, the feast:

Get Again:

-Wild Boar(Pork) with Gravy, Moist and well seasoned with 5 star gravy, just spot on. I added some of the apple sauce that was offered, which was a lovely touch.

-Salisbury Steak, Can I get a YUM YUM?! Bravo, it was juicy, and crumbled in the best way possible. Nicely seasoned as well. Ya hear that Melody? Actual, Salisbury Steak.

-Those homemade chips from the grille, Delectable. Not too salty, only a hint of flavor. One fell in my Boar Gravy which was quite a lovely surprise of tasty.

-Apple and Barley Pilaf, We were being adventurous in the sake of research and were pleasantly surprised as to how scrum-didly-um-scious that was. We'd definitely get it again.

Mehh:

-Roasted Gourds, Not a fan of the turnips or parsnips. Ahh, it was so-so.

Skip It:

-Turkey Drumstick, Sunshine got it for the spirit of the middle ages, but besides the appeal of feeling like a barbarian, it really brought nothing to the table.

-Bread Pudding, It's currently sitting in my trash, just sayin'. Slimy.

-The Flat Rootbeer Soda, REALLY, thats the third flippin time the soda's been flat within a week! GROSS! Flat Sprite was bearable (Okay, I'll admit I enjoyed it), but Rootbeer NEEDS carbonation.

And now, we'd like to address how livid we are at the fact that we've been using, and wasting paper plates and plastic utensils for over 2 weeks now. Seriously? We understand that the washing machine broke, but does it really take more than 14 days to fix it? There appears to be no recycling going on either, which makes it truly unacceptable. Any positive effect ECO-Madness could have had, has been canceled out, AND THEN SOME, by this travesty against the planet. Good-day sir, I SAID GOOD-DAY!

Man, it's good to be back. Word to yo' motha'

HALLOWEEN EXTRAVAGANZA AT NORTHWEST!

Lights off in the dining hall is normally not a good sign. Tonight however was an exception. The cuisine crew was busy for several hours today transforming our quint little dining hall into a spooky feast of epic proportions. It was well worth the awkward two hours of it being closed. A haunted ambiance was created by the black-light lighting, skeletons hanging, periodical screaming, and of course our favorite the skeleton clad employee jumping out of a coffin. He was a little too excited to scare us however and popped out a bit far, toppling his coffin and sending him tumbling out. We justly hysterically laughed for a good 5 minutes. The whole crew gets an A+ for atmosphere and effort, it was beautifully done, and greatly appreciated! Bravo!

Get Again:
-The purple mashed potatoes with Gorgonzola. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. This was a lovely break from the normal 'from a mix' variety. It was creamy and smooth with appropriately sized chunks of REAL potato, shocking, we know. We really didn't detect any taste of Gorgonzola, but it was just perfectly done.
-Fried Fingers (Green Beans with green ranch dressing), Whoever came up with the idea of frying those buggers deserves a big ol' pat on the back. I think they must have breaded them before hand because they were crunchy and wonderful. The green ranch was a nice touch and provided a nice twangy flavor. Sally wasn't a fan.
-Pumpkin Cheesecake, Just straight up delicious. Cheesecake meets pumpkin pie. The exact brilliance you'd expect.

Mehh:
-The "Roadkill", In theory it was great, waffle fries, taco beef, cheese, beans, & bacon. But the execution was lacking. It was lukewarm and by that we mean it was cold. Not pleasant. This dish has great potential and we'd like to see Northwest have another go at it.

Skip It:
-The Witches Brew, Normally the mixed punches places make are tasty and fruity. This was just weird. They mixed cherry coke and iced tea. Why??
-The chipotle chicken wings, They were not in the least bit spicy, they were oddly sweet and otherwise lacking in flavor. Blahh.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

Fantabulous dinner in da Northwest

So today was a pretty solid day, Lunch and Dinner were had in Northwest and both were  scrumdiddlyumptious!

Get Again:
-Pasta with portabella mushrooms and ham, creamy and so delicious. I didn't realize had much I had missed mushrooms until I had my first bite.
-The beef quesadilla was also really good, tasted authentic which was a nice surprise. Sadly there was no salsa/sour cream/guac to be found anywhere... maybe next time.
-The roasted chicken (for dinner) was another solid choice from the line, masterfully seasoned, it tasted like something my mom would make, for realsies.
-Aaaaand back with a vengeance: cheese ravioli with meat sauce!!! Such a crowd pleaser :)
-Nellie here, I was so excited to see the Swedish meatballs that I might have squealed in delight. The pasta underneath was smooth and cooked perfectly, the meatballs themselves juicy and delicious and then the gravy, oh the gravy. It was creamy and savory and reminded me why I became a food blogger. It tasted like the kind that my mom makes (Hi mom!) which come straight from the recipe book from Finland.
-The teriyaki chicken was perfect. A+. It was moist, flavorful, easy to cut, and was a great companion for my salad. Keep it coming.

Keeping in theme with all things fabulous, the Ice-Cream selection of last night was wonderful. They had my three favorites, Black Raspberry, Moose Tracks, and Cake Batter. Keep that coming and you'll keep your food bloggers happy Northwest!

We're back! 10/15

Hello blog-o-sphere! So sorry for our unannounced hiatus, we got busy. It happens. We'd like to give a shout out to our one follower, Ian, keep up the good work, we apologize for leaving you hanging.

Get Again:
-Spinach & Artichoke dip with Pita Chips, YUUUUUMMMMMMMMM. As a first time S & A dipper I was relieved to find out that this dip didn't taste like Spinach nor Artichoke. It was cheezy and delicious! We'd go as far as to say worth going up for seconds.

-Fried Chicken Strips, As a devout follower of the the Tyson Microwaveable strips I was ecstatic to see some plain, good ole' chicken strips in the Comfort Line. Crunchy, tender, dip-able, awesome.

-Applesauce Cake, I was skeptical because of the whole it being Vegan, but it was delicious! It was really moist and the frosting on it was creamy without being overwhelming.

Mehh:
-Ravioli with Squash, a highly debated item at our table. Sally and I were on one side just wanting straight up ravioli, cheese, sauce, tradition. The squash, sage, and lavender was just too experimental for our taste. Our new friend Jesse was loving it though, and found it worthy of going up for seconds. You be the judge.

SHITTY McSHITTY CHINESE FOOD

Never again...

So tonight we decided to spice it up a little and order out... worst mistake of my entire time here at UConn. It's unanimous, Phoenix Chinese is the worst Chinese we have ever had. Panda Express and any other chain of Asian food ousts this stuff without a doubt. The sweet and sour chicken came as chicken with watery sauce separate, the chow mein came without the noodles, the beef teriyaki without the teriyaki, and the szechuan chicken was just stereotypical barf. So pissed we all spent $10 each on food that is barely edible. Dammit.

WHAT A REBOUND! 10/2

Coming out of last night's pathetic excuse of a dinner, my faith in Northwest's dining was at an all time low. In this vulnerable state one dish proceeded to blow my mind. The "Cinnamon Coffee Cake Bar" was the single best item of food I've had in my time at UConn. Shaped like mini-loafs of bread this was coffee cake at it's very finest. Immensely moist, while still holding it's shaped when dunked into my coffee. It had the perfect amount of cinnamony-brownsugary crumblies on top, not overwhelming, but not lacking. Honestly this little loaf deserves a standing ovation. Bravo.

Awesome Lunch with a side of Worst Dinner Ever. 10/1

So Sally had a very lovely Mexican fiesta for lunch today. Ate so much she was not even the slightest bit hungry until 6:30...success. While, Nellie absolutely loathed the dinner selection tonight.

Get Again:
-The mini chicken burritos. HEAVENNNNN! It is true that good things come in small packages. Throw a lil guac on that, good to go.
-Cranberry Apple Crisp (a la mode, as always). Just a word of advice, anything in the dining hall that is warm with the word "crisp" in it, deserves a spot on your plate. Absolute perfection (Nellie).
-Roasted Garlic Bread, simply delicious. Nothing garlicly about it but it was just really buttery and crunchy and gooood.
-The potatoes of the sausage and potatoes. Those little starchy buggers were splendid. Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, they have my blessing.

Mehhh:
-The fajita vegetales were not as exciting as one would think.
-Everything on Nellie's plate was a mehhh to her, espeially the Italian Encrusted Tender. Booo. Not entirely sure what kind of a meat it was, but if your seeking some protein, it'll do.

Skip It:
-Whatever random pasta they threw together and put in the comfort line. Maybe we went to the d-hall at the wrong time (7:10!) but the selection offered was horrendous. Making the preliminary lap around left me wondering if I wanted anything. The pasta was just lame. I tried adding the sausage of the potatoes with sausage (which was nothing special either) to spice it up, which was no help.
-Fat-free Raspberry Swirl Ice-cream, For the record the only reason I tried this god-awful flavor was because there was literally no other desserts available. It's been a long week of exams and cold winds and all I wanted was something tasty for dessert. That's all. I wasn't asking for much. Something. And all there was, was fat-free ice-cream. Imagine my disappointment. Yeah, don't do it. Each spoonful increased my resentment. Tisk, tisk, tiskkkk.

Happy October!
PS. We're loving the festive fall decorations that keep popping up!

Dinner 9/28

Dinner tonight, luckluster.

Get Again:
-Popcorn Shrimp, perfectly crunchy, and not too shrimpy in flavor (if that makes any sense). Nellie made a DIY caesar salad and threw those babies on top, DO ITTTTTTT
-Stuffing, Sal says it was a bit mushy but still good. It could have used some more crispiness but it's worth a scoop of.

Mehh:
-Grilled Apple and Ham Panini, this sandwich has potential to be awesome, but really, what's with the cinnamon raisin bread? That was a little too much to handle. The ham, apple, mustard, and cheese worked really well together, if only it was on wheat.
-Sweet Potatoes, they weren't as good as they normally are; they were left unfinished on the plate due to dryness.

A side-note: Where is the Red Velvet Cake?!? The website got our hopes up and then nothing. Not cool.

Song of the post: The Compromise by The Format
